2012 BAFTA Nominations: My Thoughts

For those who don't know, the Baftas are basically the British version of the Oscars. They're known for having weird fucking trophies, British actor bias, and nominating many expected actors along with a few right out of the blue. So the nominees were announced a couple weeks ago and The Baftas will be held on February 12, 2012. Let's take a look.

Best Supporting Actor

Kenneth Branagh- My Week With Marilyn

Jim Broadbent- The Iron Lady

Jonah Hill- Moneyball

Phillip Seymour Hoffman- The Ides of March

Christopher Plummer- Beginners

What Surprised Me: Jim Broadbent and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Go to their wikipedia pages, see their list of films. Next to the title and character name will be a list of awards that they have received. Each have one. A Bafta nomination. now look at Christopher Plummer, Jonah Hill, and Kenneth Branagh. They've got tons of nominations. Broadbent and Hoffman were nominated out of nowhere.
Who was Snubbed: Nick Nolte for Warrior but more importantly Albert Brooks for Drive. His iconic, menacing, brilliant performance will be remembered in decades to come.

Jim Broadbent award nominations

Albert Brooks award nominations

Who Will Win: With Albert Brooks out of the picture, it's clearly going to Christopher Plummer for Beginners

Best Supporting Actress

Jessica Chastain- The Help

Judi Dench- My Week with Marilyn

Melissa McCarthy- Bridesmaids

Carey Mulligan- Drive

Octavia Spencer- The Help

What Surprised Me: Judi Dench in My Week with Marilyn. She had no prior nominations for the role and all of the hype for that film was around Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh.
Carey Mulligan in Drive. I loved Drive and I love Mulligan but I wouldn't call her performance award worthy. She's recieved much more acclaim for her performance in Shame.
Who was snubbed: Shailene Woodley in The Descendants, Carey Mulligan in Shame, Janet Mcteer in Albert Nobbs.
Who will Win: Octavia Spencer

Best Actress

Berenice Bejo- The Artist

Viola Davis- The Help

Meryl Streep- The Iron Lady

Tilda Swinton- We Need to Talk about Kevin

Michelle Williams- My Week with Marilyn

What Surprised Me: Berenice Bejo. It's not that I didn't expect her to get nominated, I just didn't expect the nomination in this category. The film was Dujardin's story. Every scene with her except one is somehow related to Dujardin's character. She was a supporting actress.
Who was Snubbed: Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs, Rooney Mara for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Kirsten Dunst for Melancholia
Who will win: Meryl streep. Although I predict Davis to win the Oscar, Streep will win the Bafta since it's a British character.

Best Actor
George Clooney- The Descendants

Jean Dujardin- The Artist

Michael Fassbender- Shame

Gary Oldman- Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Brad Pitt- Moneyball

What Surprised Me: Nothing really. I expected Clooney, Dujardin, and Pitt to be nominated and I knew that Oldman would bump either Fassbender or Dicaprio out of the way to make room for him. It ended up being Dicaprio.
Who was Snubbed: As Mentioned earlier, Leonardo Dicaprio for J. Edgar. Also Ryan Gosling for Drive, Michael Shannon for Get Shelter, and Joseph-Gordon Levitt for 50/50.
Who Will Win: Dujardin, with George Clooney as a runner up.

Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer

Attack the Block- Joe Cornish (Writer/Director)

Black Pond-  Will Sharpe (Director/Writer), Tom Kingsley (Director), Sarah Brocklehurst (Producer)
Coriolanus- Ralph Fiennes (Director)

Submarine- Richard Ayoade (Director/Writer)

Tyannosaur- Paddy Considine (Director), Diarmid Scrimshaw (Producer)

I didn't predict this rather strange category and I hadn't even heard of Black Pond or Submarine until now. Attack the Block is the only 1 of the 5 that i've seen. It's a great film and i'm glad to see it get some recognition.

Best Original Screenplay
Michel Hazanavicius-The Artist

Annie Mumolo, Kristen Wiig-Bridesmaids

John Michael McDonagh-The Guard

Abi Morgan- The Iron Lady

Woody Allen- Midnight in Paris

What Surprised Me: The Iron Lady. It only has a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. Also The Guard. Great movie, didn't have much hype surrounding it.
Who was Snubbed: Margin Call, 50/50, Contagion, Beginners, A Seperation, Warrior
Who Will Win: The Artist. Midnight in Paris is runner up.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash-The Descendants

Tate Taylor- The Help

George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Beau Willimon - The Ides Of March

Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin - Moneyball

Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

What Surprised Me: The Help. It's a great movie....because of it's actors, not because of it's screenplay. If it weren't for the phenomenal performances, the film wouldn't have been that acclaimed.
Who was Snubbed: Um let's see here. Hossein Amini for Drive. John Logan for Hugo. Steve Zaillian for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Who will Win: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy

Outstanding British Film
My Week with Marilyn

Senna

Shame

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

We Need to Talk About Kevin

What Surprised Me: Senna and My Week with Marilyn. I really wanna see Senna. The film just never had much award hype. Marilyn is apparently more of a performance piece than a story piece.
Who was Snubbed: I don't keep track of British films vs. non-british films much but I'm surprised by the lack of Harry Potter.
Who Will Win: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The other nominees don't have screenplay nominations.

Best Director
Tomas Alfredson- Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Michel Hazanavicius- The Artist

Lynne Ramsay- We Need to Talk about Kevin

Martin Scorcese- Hugo

Nicolas Winding Refn- Drive

What Surprised Me: Drive. Drive is the greatest movie in the universe but seemed too amazing to attract mainstream award shows. Though it's unexplainable why Brooks wasn't nominated, it's nice to see Refn finally get some love. Oh yeah Ramsay and Alfredson are pretty surprising too. The Baftas are weird
Who was Snubbed: Former Oscar frontrunner Alexander Payne for The Descendants, David Fincher for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Steve McQueen for Shame, Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, Bennett Miller for Moneyball
Who will win: Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist

Best Film
The Artist
The Descendants

Drive

The Help

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

What Surprised Me: Oh my good lord sweet baby Jesus. Is that Drive? why yes it is. The world is fine and dandy again. I'm also shocked by the Help. As I said before, it's a performance piece.
Who was Snubbed: Hugo, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Descendants, Moneyball, Margin Call, Ides of March
Who Will win: This is between Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Artist but I'm going with the Artist. First off, it's weird that Tinker Tailor was nominated for both Outstanding British Film AND Best Film. Similar to how the Oscars nominated Life is Beautiful for both Best Picture and Best Foreign Film. Tinker will win outstanding British Film. The Artist will win Best Film. Everyone is happy. Plus The Artist has 12 BAFTA nominations. Tinker Tailor has 11.

Yeah. Decent nominees. problems as always. who gives a shit. List of films with multiple nominees
The Artist- 12 nominations
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy- 11 nominations
My Week with Marilyn- 7 nomiaations

Drive- 4 nominations
